There comes a point in the life of every believer when you know there must be more.

You still pray. You still attend church. You still love God. But deep within you, there is a hunger for something beyond routine. That hunger is not a sign that something is wrong. It is often God’s invitation to come closer.

In Ezekiel 47, the prophet saw a river flowing from the temple. As he followed it, the water became deeper. It started at his ankles, then his knees, then his waist, until it became a river that could not be crossed because it was deep enough to swim in.

That river is a picture of the life God desires for every believer.

Notice that the river kept getting deeper. God never intended our relationship with Him to become stagnant. There is always more of His presence to experience, more of His grace to discover, and more of His power to walk in.

Jesus echoed this truth when He declared, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink… Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37–38). John explains that Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit.

The river Ezekiel saw now flows through every believer. The Holy Spirit lives within us.

The challenge is that many believers are content to remain in shallow water.

At ankle depth, you are still in control. At knee depth, you can still choose your own direction. But once the water is deep enough to swim, you can no longer rely on yourself. You must trust the current.

That is what walking with the Holy Spirit is like.

God is not calling us to admire the river from the bank or to stand where life is comfortable. He is inviting us into a deeper walk where we trust Him completely.

Going deeper means praying beyond routine until you encounter God. It means obeying the Holy Spirit even when His leading stretches your faith. It means allowing Him to shape your thoughts, your decisions, and your priorities every day.

The beautiful thing about Ezekiel’s vision is that wherever the river flowed, life followed. Barren places became fruitful. Dead things lived again. Healing and restoration were everywhere.

The same is true today. Wherever the Holy Spirit is given room to work, lives are transformed.

Never settle for ankle-deep Christianity when God is inviting you into deeper waters.

The river is still flowing.

The invitation is still open.

The only question is whether you are willing to let go of the shore and trust the One who leads you.
