“But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Job 32:8 ASV
I had a brain wave years ago which I honestly believe till this day was a sense of divine direction, and that was to engage the services of the nations leading Brand Consultant. I know perception is stronger than facts and saw how wrong perceptions of Jesus robbed many people of their miracles – the scribes and Pharisees in Capernaum in Luke 5 and citizens of Nazareth, the home town of Jesus, in Luke 4 and Mark 6. As anointed as Christ was and as willing as He was to solve all problems, meet needs and change lives, He was limited by the unbelief of those who perceived Him as a traitor, thief, heretic, dissident or fraud. Till this day the same fact rings true in our world. Jesus is the answer for the world but the world is blinded by secular humanism, dead religion and growing cynicism caused by a deliberate propaganda of the agents of darkness against the truth of the gospel of Christ.
This is why I do not mind attacks from those who feel it’s a sellout and lack of vision on the part of my likes who will deliberately engage the services of professionals at times to ‘package’ or ‘market’ their institutions or programs. The truth is that even they do the same to a degree or the other by themselves. Else, they wouldn’t print handbills, nor engage the use of social media platforms etc. I believe it’s a misunderstanding and my logic about it is simple. It’s simply a matter of communication and how we do it simply influences how we are perceived and responded to. Anyway, it’s not a doctrine and should merely be a matter of personal preference.
The coach obliged me after listening to my rants and about my mission to the city of Lagos, Nigeria after pastoring in Ibadan for 18 years. He saw the value in introducing our ministry to Lagos in a way that communicates our sincerity of purpose, rather than being categorized among the charlatans who truly prey on the vulnerabilities of the disadvantaged, the desperate and the disorientated in our society. We are in the city to meet needs, change lives and to obey our divine mandate and we should realize the natural suspicion of the city towards new arrivals.
In what became a full day of brainstorming as he sought to understand my sense of divine direction and the experiences of our church leaders who were with me, we ended up re-articulating our vision, mission, values and slogan. As a believer and a spiritually sensitive person, he knew all he needed was to help articulate what God revealed to me in secular parlance. Apart from introducing Branding as scriptural and not in contradiction to any biblical doctrine, the rest of the day was about he and his team questioning us, probing into our minds, articulating our answers and guiding us into agreeable conclusions. We left the rigorous exercise physically drained but spiritually and emotionally energized. I did not realize what a poor job I had done as a leader in communicating our vision and values to our core leaders, talk less of the congregations under my oversight. As a result of this exercise, my core leaders and associates became more enlightened about what I had been saying so poorly. I will delve into how we now faced the task of communicating it to our entire ministry and getting them all on board another day.
I have to point out here that I was also angry at the end of the day. First at the consultant for not telling us what to do as if he was the Holy Spirit who called me into the ministry. I had expected that professionalism meant having special skills to read ‘organizational crystal balls’ and bringing out miracle solutions. It’s amazing how a man of God like me can think when he is not ‘in step with the Spirit’. The same thing drives us to ‘seek out’ prophets in a New Testament age in which the Spirit of God dwells within each and every one of us and also guides us personally.
Secondly, I was mad at myself for not having articulated all the ideas like like the consultant did before that day because ALL the answers and ideas came from us, particularly a lot from me. I would a few years later attend a John Maxwell Leadership Coaching Course and learn that a coach believes the answer to every question and solution to every problem lies within the individual. His responsibility is not to tell him what to do but to ask the right questions that will bring the answer out. How suddenly the light came on in my soul! This was what the Brand Consultant did! I have come to respect coaches for the value they bring in helping to sharpen direction for many and one of my passions which has always been to help people discover their God given purposes was enhanced by this discovery.
Dear friend, I wonder what questions are on your mind today or problems that seem to overwhelm you. The answer is WITHIN you. Our text reveals the human spirit is blessed with inspiration from the Almighty. The Spirit of God dwelling within you reveals to your spirit ALL you need to know. There is a whole lot your spirit knows that your mind is not catching yet.
“The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, Searching all his innermost parts.” Proverbs 20:27 ASV
God guides us through our spirits and if you and I will get away from the clamor and clutter of everyday life, stress, pressure and activities, we will tap into that breadth of the Almighty from our minds and find the solutions we need so badly. There is always a way out of every predicament, a resolution for every puzzle and an answer to every question. If you are filled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, spend considerable time praying in the spirit and journaling ideas that come to your mind.
“For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Proverbs 24:6 ASV
Pastor, I have tried on my own to get this direction and I couldn’t. What do I do now? Then seek godly counsel from a wise leader or coach who can help navigate you to the answers WITHIN you; not taking the place of God in your life but leading you to what you always knew that you weren’t certain about. I am amazed why Christians have nothing against doctors treating our sicknesses but have something against psychologists helping with mental, emotional or relational issues. Just as natural approaches are limited and the supernatural makes the difference, so is it okay to take advantage of the natural where it is available and employ the supernatural where the natural is limited. Where you find godly Counsellors, coaches and consultants, let them help you especially when their approach is not only secular but also spiritual. Many lives, businesses and particularly homes will be saved if only we can reach out for some help.
Dig within for an answer today and if you can’t find it by yourself, find a spirit filled Christian who will help you find it. The professional approach of the consultant I mentioned earlier was helpful especially because he understood spiritual things. I agree to the danger in seeking help at times where there is no biblical understanding on the part of the coach or Counsellor but it’s amazing how much help there is that we often do not take advantage of because there are spiritual Christians in most secular endeavors.
You just may not know it yet but on the strength of the Word of God I guarantee you that the ANSWER is looking for you from WITHIN yourself.
